A wonderfully romantic early 19th-century amethyst and diamond ring, dating from around the 1810s and made in 18ct gold and silver. At its centre sits an elongated purple amethyst, its rich violet colour beautifully contrasted by antique-cut diamonds. The foliate design to either side is set predominantly with rose-cut diamonds, with a larger old mine-cut diamond positioned on each side of the central amethyst. Further rose-cut diamonds continue onto the shoulders. The slightly irregular old cuts and hand-made settings are very much part of its charm. Rose cuts, with their flat backs and softly faceted domed surfaces, give a wonderfully subtle shimmer, while the two old mine cuts provide a little more sparkle. Rather than the uniformity of modern jewellery, each stone has its own individual shape and personality. Amethyst has been prized for centuries and traditionally symbolises calm, sincerity and clarity of mind. It is also the birthstone for February. Purple was historically associated with royalty and status, making amethyst a particularly evocative choice for Georgian jewellery. More than two hundred years old, this is a wonderfully atmospheric survivor from the early 19th century and a beautiful example of Georgian coloured-stone jewellery.
