Bashofu is a traditional, lightweight Okinawan textile woven from the fibers of the itobasho (Japanese fiber banana) plant. Know as a breathable summer fabric that does not cling to the skin, it is meticulously handcrafted in Kijoka, Okinawa, and involves over 23 steps to make, from fiber extraction to hand-weaving. It is designated as an Important Intangible Cultural Property of Japan. While most Bashofu textiles are typically plain, allowing the natural beauty of the fabric to shine, this particular piece is distinctive. It has been stencil-dyed with a variety of patterns, evenly spaced across the fabric, adding a unique touch to its traditional design.
