Tianjin Sideboard Made From Burr Elm - 19th Century

This elegant Tianjin sideboard originates from the port city of Tianjin in Northern China and dates to the 19th century. The restrained form is rooted in the clean, balanced aesthetics of Ming dynasty furniture, where proportion, craftsmanship and the beauty of the timber were considered more important than excessive decoration. Constructed from richly figured elm wood, the cabinet displays striking burr grain throughout the doors and drawer fronts, enhanced by its warm honey-toned patina and original brass hardware. Traditionally used both for household storage and as altar cabinets for ancestor worship, pieces such as this would have occupied an important position within the home. Three drawers run along the top above a spacious open interior concealed behind a pair of panelled doors. A removable central support bar allows easier access for storing larger objects. Subtle carved detailing along the lower apron adds an elegant decorative flourish while retaining the simplicity characteristic of Northern Chinese furniture.
