Zildjian Cymbals

This remarkable photograph is taken between a magnificent pair of Zildjian 17 inch K Symphonic Cymbals, in the fleeting moment before they are struck together. The image reveals an intimate perspective of these powerful instruments, transforming their hand-beaten surfaces into a dramatic architectural space of light, texture, and anticipation. Zildjian has one of the longest histories of any musical instrument maker in the world. The company’s origins date back more than 400 years, to 1618, when its first cymbals were created for the court of the Sultan of the Ottoman Empire. Now based in the United States, Zildjian remains in family hands some 15 generations later. The story began with the alchemist Avedis Zildjian, whose attempt to create gold instead led to the discovery of what would become one of the finest cymbal alloys ever made. That alloy, still used today, remains a closely guarded family secret. In this image, the result of that centuries-old tradition is seen from within, just before sound erupts.
