This plant listing for reference only. Aloe ‘Vulcan’s Fire’ is a long-cultivated hybrid aloe selected at the Huntington Desert Garden, where it has been grown since at least the 1930s and valued for its distinctive bicolored winter flowers and cool-toned foliage. It forms medium-sized, somewhat open rosettes about 1 to 1.5 feet tall and 1.5 to 2 feet wide, composed of narrow, lance-shaped leaves with a glaucous gray-green, matte surface. Leaf margins carry small, evenly spaced reddish to copper-toned teeth, and the tips often take on a reddish blush in strong light. The inflorescences rise above the foliage on upright to slightly arching stalks and branch into several elongated, densely flowered racemes. Buds begin deep blood-red and open to yellow, creating a striking two-tone effect within each raceme, with flowering typically occurring in winter from December through January. The plant is believed to be an open-pollinated hybrid, likely involving Aloe aculeata with possible influence from Aloe cryptopoda, combining structural and floral traits from both. It performs best in full sun to light shade in well-drained soil with infrequent watering once established, forming clumps slowly over time. Best suited to frost-free or lightly frosted climates, it is used as an ornamental accent or in mass plantings where its synchronized winter bloom provides strong seasonal impact in dry, Mediterranean-style landscapes.
