Exceptionally well preserved and beautifully constructed, this vintage sheepskin flying jacket is an impressive interpretation of the classic American cold-weather flight jacket. Constructed from substantial double-faced sheepskin in a deep seal brown, it combines a beautifully preserved leather exterior with dense natural cream fleece throughout, giving the jacket considerable weight, warmth and presence. The origins of this style lie in the heavyweight sheepskin jackets developed for American aircrew operating in the extreme cold encountered at altitude. The best-known example was the B-3, introduced for the U.S. Army Air Corps during the 1930s and subsequently associated with bomber crews during the Second World War. Rather than combining an outer shell with a separate insulating lining, these jackets utilised double-faced sheepskin, with the leather exterior providing protection and the dense natural fleece of the hide itself providing warmth. This particular jacket is a later vintage interpretation of that tradition and carries an unusual military-style internal label reading “USAF Jacket – Type G-8 – Flyer's Man Intermed.”, together with the reference MIL-J-1704B (USAF) and stock number 0712-48-1394. In the absence of documented military provenance, we are not presenting the jacket as an original USAF-issued garment, but rather as a vintage civilian interpretation incorporating the distinctive character and practical detailing of historic American flight clothing. The sheepskin is one of the outstanding features of this example. Substantial in both weight and feel, the hides remain strong, supple and beautifully structured. The deep seal-brown exterior retains its natural grain and gentle creasing, while the cream shearling remains exceptionally dense throughout the body and sleeves. As with traditional sheepskin flying jackets, this fleece is the natural reverse of the exterior hide rather than a separate lining. The oversized shearling collar forms one of the jacket's defining features. Worn open, it exposes a broad expanse of natural cream fleece; in colder conditions it can be raised completely around the neck and secured using the substantial twin leather throat straps. A heavy metal zip closes the front, while two angled leather-trimmed hand-warmer pockets are incorporated neatly into the lower body. Adjustable leather straps with rectangular metal buckles sit at either side of the waist, allowing the lower opening to be drawn closer to the body. Natural fleece is deliberately exposed around the cuffs and lower hem, emphasising the substantial thickness of the sheepskin. The rear remains comparatively clean and purposeful, with broad panels of sheepskin joined by a vertical centre seam and horizontal body construction. Inside, there is no conventional fabric lining to conceal the material: the dense natural shearling remains exposed throughout, allowing the quality and thickness of the hides to be appreciated immediately. An exceptionally well-preserved vintage sheepskin flying jacket with considerable presence. The combination of heavyweight seal-brown sheepskin, remarkably dense cream fleece, twin throat straps and unusual USAF-style label makes this a particularly distinctive example, while its generous XXL proportions make it considerably harder to find than the smaller sizes in which vintage sheepskin jackets are more commonly encountered. Condition & Preservation Very good vintage condition and exceptionally well preserved throughout. The heavyweight sheepskin remains strong, supple and structurally excellent, retaining the substantial weight and density of the original hides. The seal-brown exterior displays natural grain, gentle creasing and minor surface variation consistent with careful vintage wear, while retaining a remarkably rich and consistent overall finish. As part of our preparation process, the jacket has been specialist leather cleaned and carefully conditioned in-house using our own workshop leather-care blends. The leather has been gently cleaned and nourished with particular consideration for the age and character of the original sheepskin, preserving its natural grain and tonal variation rather than attempting to produce an artificially uniform finish. The natural cream shearling remains remarkably full and dense throughout the body and sleeves, with the exposed fleece around the collar, cuffs and lower hem presenting particularly well. The twin leather throat straps, side waist adjusters, metal hardware and main front zip remain present and in very good order. Please study the detailed photographs, which show the natural grain, fleece, hardware and overall condition closely. A beautifully preserved and fully wearable example, carefully prepared in-house and ready to wear.
