The Brockman Gallery: Los Angeles, 1967–1990

A visual history of the iconic Brockman Gallery, celebrating its art and artists through essays, photographs, and archival imagery. This exhibition will be on view at LACMA from October 18, 2026 through January 24, 2027. Pre-Sale will ship Fall 2026. The Brockman Gallery: Los Angeles, 1967–1990 tells the visual history of the Brockman Gallery, founded in South L.A. by brothers Alonzo and Dale Brockman Davis in the wake of the Watts Rebellion. Their space became vital for young artists of color, nurturing the early careers of David Hammons, Suzanne Jackson, and Carrie Mae Weems, among others. Featuring rich archival material and over more than eighty works of art, the book traces how the Davises cultivated a space for artistic experimentation, intellectual exchange, and multicultural community. Three essays by prominent curators and art historians address the history of the gallery’s community-driven project, its wide-reaching reverberations, and its legacy. The catalogue will outline a comprehensive gallery chronology and historical timeline, with materials from the Brockman Gallery Archive at the Los Angeles Public Library, and detailed biographies with visual analyses. - Hardcover - 208 pages - Published by Angel City Press on October 13, 2026
