John Darnielle has spent decades building one of the most singular bodies of work in American songwriting, turning autobiography, obsession, and hard-won survival into something his listeners carry like talismans. With a catalog stretching back to lo-fi cassette recordings in the early 90s, he's always understood that memory is its own kind of fiction, and that the past doesn't stay put. These songs are loosely about the 70s, 80s, and 90s, which is to say they’re about the accumulation of days, each one a little further back than the next, sometimes miraculously seeming clearer as they recede and sometimes blurring into unrecognizable shapes which are sometimes pleasant and sometimes troubling.
