Woven on the GL3, a shuttle loom built by Toyota Automatic Loom Works half a century ago, this original 15oz selvedge denim was engineered from the ground up to draw out everything that vintage machine has to offer. The irregular texture of the yarn, its precise count, and the exact density of the warp and weft threads were all carefully constructed according to Studio D'artisan's own proprietary recipe — a formula built specifically around the character of the GL3. The result is a fabric with a sculptural depth in its unevenness and a raw, rustic hand that today's efficient, uniform mass-production denim simply cannot reproduce. This jacket is cut from that very cloth, then dyed using Amami Doro-zome, a mud-dyeing technique passed down for generations on the island of Amami Oshima. The process relies on nothing but two natural elements: dye extracted from the island's native teechigi tree (sharinbai, known in English as Indian hawthorn), and iron-rich mud drawn from strata more than 1.5 million years old. Each piece is dyed one at a time by hand, its outcome entrusted to the patience of nature rather than the uniformity of a machine. The original color composition that emerges carries a depth and warmth no artificial dye could ever replicate — a richness that can only come from time, earth, and water working together.
