This time it’s a 1996 Glenburgie refill bourbon barrel, chosen by our friends at Gordon & MacPhail just for Milroy’s. Usually saved for the Ballantine’s blend, it’s unusual to see single cask releases from the Speyside distillery. Here, it's a riot of tropical fruits and vibrantly funky notes. A must-taste dram and a rare one, too – just 160 bottles have been released. Tasting note: Nose: Cinnamon and hints of soft ginger root arrive first, followed by stewed pineapple, papaya, and an earthy base. A sweet tangy note flows in and out of the glass as the dram opens up. Palate: Even at full cask strength it is deliciously rich and smooth. The zingy nose calms down a little, giving way to honey-glazed toasted brioche. Soft spices and vanilla follow, but the tropical fruits remain central throughout. Finish: Generous and softly warming with more gentle spices.
