Throughout Church history and art, Mary is often portrayed with a blue mantle. Blue symbolizes the divine grace that enveloped her at her conception and her holiness as the Queen of Heaven. But the color's meaning doesn't end there. In the Old Testament, when the Ark of the Covenant was being moved, it was covered in a blue cloth. Today, the Church recognizes Mary as the New Ark that carried the Lord for nine months in her womb—and the one who reigns beside her Son as the Queen of Heaven with "a crown of twelve stars" (Revelation 12:1). The oval stone shape was chosen to represent Mary's aureole (halo of light). Over the centuries, the Blessed Virgin Mary has often been depicted with an oval-shaped halo of light surrounding her entire body. It's a subtle detail, but it's packed with meaning—the halo signifies her holiness as the Mother of God.
