I was first made aware of the Blue Mosque through seeing a painting titled The Golden Horn by Edward Seago. His painting featured the mosque which dominated the painting. I was very much taken by Seago‘s use of light warm yellows and cool blues which contrasted beautifully with the rich dark shadow areas. This simple watercolour is taken from a completely different angle yet has similar qualities. Dark, expressive horizontal foreground brush strokes contrast the more intricate vertical lines that describe this masterpiece of Imperial architecture. It’s not the first time I’ve painted a mosque. In 2010 I painted two watercolours of the Grand Mosque in Oman which are available as limited edition prints. The same year I was also commissioned to paint a large watercolour of a much smaller mosque in Oman that was built by an Omani gentleman for his community.
