It sits and is located on a "guide tube" which surrounds the input shaft of the transmission. When you push the clutch pedal down; the slave cylinder forces the shift fork to push the release bearing into the pressure plate. This action allows for you to shift with the transmission disengaged. It is a common and recommended practice to replace this component when installing a new clutch. However, it is possible for the release bearing to fail before the clutch needs replacement.
