Hand-carved from a single length of wood, this tent peg was traditionally made and used by Tuareg nomads of the Sahara to secure their tents when making camp. A rounded, domed head sits above a slender turned neck, giving way to a body wrapped in bands of rope-twist carving and fields of small, hand-engraved floral and circular motifs — patterning distinct from the diamond lattice seen on other pieces in the tradition. Years of handling and age have given the wood a naturally weathered patina, and the piece is presented mounted on a fitted stand — as much a piece of sculpture and cultural history now as it once was a functional tool.
