Aune Audio N7 Headphone Amplifier
The Aune N7 is a fully discrete Class A headphone amplifier that puts up to 6.5 watts of balanced output into a chassis just over eight inches wide. It borrows the architecture of much larger amplifiers, twin JFET input stage, R2R volume control, and selectable Class A bias current, and makes that recipe fit a desk where space actually matters. The N7 is a pure analog amplifier and preamp with no DAC inside: feed it from any DAC or streamer over RCA or balanced XLR and it takes care of everything after the conversion. For listeners stepping up from a dongle or all-in-one to their first serious amplifier, this is the point where Class A stops being exotic and starts being affordable. Real Class A, Warm on Purpose Class A means the output transistors conduct continuously instead of switching on and off with the signal, which eliminates crossover distortion and keeps the amplifier in its most linear range at all times. The sound this design is known for is smooth, full-bodied, and naturally warm, and the N7 runs true Class A rather than borrowing the label. The input stage uses matched twin JFETs packaged together so both devices heat and behave identically, keeping the circuit's midpoint voltage stable and the character consistent. JFETs are the reason the N7 earns its tube-like description: high input impedance and a naturally smooth transfer characteristic, with none of a tube's fragility or maintenance. Two Current Levels, Two Gain Levels, One Quiet Background Like Aune's flagship amplifiers, the N7 offers dual-level Class A bias current: A-L for everyday listening and A-H for a fuller, more forceful presentation, shown in blue or red on the display along with real-time temperature. Two gain settings then match the output to the headphone, from sensitive in-ear monitors on low gain to demanding full-size headphones on high. Behind that flexibility sits a measured noise floor of 3 microvolts in high gain and THD+N below 0.0004% at 1kHz. In practice, IEMs get silence instead of hiss, and hard-to-drive headphones get 6,570mW into 32 ohms or 750mW into 300 ohms from the balanced output. A full aluminum chassis with side heatsink fins keeps sustained Class A operation stable. R2R Volume That Stays Balanced at Night The N7 uses two JRC R2R electronic volume chips with dedicated op-amps, forming a four-channel balanced volume chain. Unlike a conventional potentiometer, which loses left-right balance at the bottom of its range, this control stays matched at the low levels where late-night listening actually happens, and it preserves imaging and stage while doing it. One multifunctional knob handles volume, gain, current level, and headphone or preamp switching, with a 3-inch display keeping the current state readable from across the desk. An aluminum remote is included, so the N7 works as well from a couch as it does at arm's reach. A Preamp for the Rest of the System The N7 offers two headphone outputs (6.35mm single-ended and 4.4mm balanced), two line inputs (RCA and XLR), and two preamp outputs (RCA and XLR), with an independent Class A preamp function. Plug in powered monitors or a power amplifier and it becomes the control center of a compact desktop system, headphones by night, speakers by day. Power comes from an external 18V adapter, which keeps AC conversion outside the chassis. Component selection follows Aune's desktop line: Panasonic electrolytic capacitors, WIMA decoupling capacitors, and a communication-grade PCB. How the N7 Compares The natural reference point is Aune's own S17 Pro EVO, which shares the same design ideas: twin JFET input, R2R volume, selectable Class A current. The S17 Pro EVO adds a 50W internal toroidal supply, a 4-pin XLR output, and 7.5 watts of balanced power for the hardest planar loads. The N7 delivers most of that architecture at half the price, and at 6.5 watts balanced it still out-muscles nearly everything else near $399. Run your own headphones through our headphone power calculator to see how much you actually need. Aune photographs the N7 next to its AR5000 open-back for a reason: the pairing makes a complete, warm, spacious desktop rig for well under a thousand dollars. It fits just as readily under any DAC you already own.
