She grew up witnessing the everyday injustices of racial segregation in the American South and later trained as a seamstress whilst becoming active in her local community. The Montgomery Bus Boycott: On 1 December 1955, Rosa refused to give up her seat to a white passenger on a Montgomery, Alabama bus, in defiance of segregation laws. Her arrest sparked the 381-day Montgomery Bus Boycott, a pivotal moment in the American civil rights movement. A Lasting Legacy: Often called the "Mother of the Civil Rights Movement", Rosa continued advocating for equality and justice throughout her life, working alongside other civil rights leaders and supporting community organisations. Recognition: Rosa received the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 1996 and the Congressional Gold Medal in 1999, among the United States' highest civilian honours, in recognition of her courage and lasting impact. Remembering Rosa: Rosa Parks passed away on 24 October 2005, aged 92. Her quiet act of courage remains one of the defining moments in the fight for civil rights and continues to inspire people around the world.
