The Pounamu South Pendant heroes an oval of greenstone (pounamu porohema) in a vertical setting, a modern and striking design. Inspired by the origin myth of how the North and South Islands of New Zealand came to be, our North and South designs feature pounamu stylised to represent Te Ika-a-Māui / Fish of Māui (North Island) and Te Waka-a-Māui / Canoe of Māui (South Island). Māori cherish this beautiful and increasingly rare stone that holds great meaning. Pounamu, a nephrite jade and is also known as greenstone. Found exclusively in Te Waipounamu (the South Island of Aotearoa New Zealand) pounamu is a taonga (treasure) that was prized as both currency and a means of coalescing Māori whakapapa (birthright and genealogy) and pounamu that was handed down through generations was the most revered.
