Ensis III, charcoal
The Ensis bag is a result of a collaboration between Lies Mertens and designer Jonas Van Put, combining the precision of leatherworking with the sculptural approach of furniture design. Ensis II is the second edition of 10 numbered pieces in honour of the Belgian Art Prize. Its wooden handle is made from Afromosia wood, reclaimed from a residential project. Each handle was individually hand-filed. Its shape is inspired by slender form of a razor clam, also known as Ensis. The bag itself is formed from two sculpted leather halves coming together like a closing shell. It is crafted in Crispy calf, a rare leather achieved by shrinking the hide to create a structured effect and suede-like matte finish.
