A Special Collector Set from 1946--the FIRST set in the 1946 catalog! You are looking at a really special set. This is the first postwar set Lionel offered--the legendary "Electronic Set." THIS ONE is the first of the two electronic sets they made. The caboose is the 1946 PENNSYLVANIA metal caboose, and the engine features the more scarce "smoke bulb" which has NOT been replaced with the more common and familiar pellet unit. Lionel as ahead of its time with this one. It came with a central controller that enabled you to control things like uncoupling, unloading, and even some steam engine features WITHOUT A REMOTE CONTROL TRACK. Simply press the corresponding button on the controller, and you are making magic anywhere on the layout! Unfortunately, it did not go well for Lionel. The 1946 asking price was just too much. It was also too different. They tried one more year. Then they moved on. You just unplug the tender plug and moved the plug from the locomotive into the other receptacle in the back. CONDITION: C-6 very good. Some cars are C-7 excellent. Tested and did not get electronic response which means units need "tuning" for which there are instructions in the manual OR the tube is out in the controller. Engine tested and does work but needs a service. Whistle tender needs service. Engine shows handling and use. Lots of rubs and small scratches and some rust on axles. There is some rust on the undersides and axles on the cars--will leave to next owner to clean. The Controller is in GREAT shape--looks sharp. Cars vary from excellent to very good, but mostly looks nice. All stickers are flaking. Most are partial. Repro stickers are available. The instructions are missing the cover. BOXES are good. Some missing end flaps, most have them torn, but how nice to have the right boxes for these cars. The box for the Control Box is especially nice.
