An Indian Entrance Double Door
This splendid Indian doorway, dating to the C.1900 reveals its rich history through colorful layers of weathered mineral pigments. All patina is original. The upper lintel is adorned with intricate motifs of hanging pomegranate flowers, symbolizing fertility and abundance. At the ends, a protrusion resembling a Hindu temple is decorated with mango leaves and lotus flowers, symbolizing prosperity, purity, and spirituality. The lower lintel features a centered "Kalash," or "pot of prosperity," encased within a temple motif with sprawling betel nuts and marigolds, symbolizing abundance, hospitality, and good luck. Supporting brackets are decorated with more intricate carvings, including peacock-floral hybrids, symbolizing beauty and grace. The door frame itself, inspired by Doric columns, has clean-cut shafts that contrast with the intricate carvings above. At the base of the doorposts is a carved Kalash with marigolds. The outer doors, with hand-forged iron rods and latch hardware, follow a British colonial design. The colorful inner doors have a flat surface with decorative iron stripes and an elevated rim adorned with marigolds and temple motifs. This complete entrance door is a testament to the exquisite craftsmanship and cultural heritage of its time.
