Late 19th Century Victorian Walnut Marble-Top Commode Washstand
Walnut Victorian washstand with a white veined-marble top and a shaped backsplash incorporating two raised soap-dish platforms. A broad upper drawer sits above a pair of paneled cupboard doors, with carved leaf motifs, rounded moldings, and turned corner details carrying the decoration down the case. Small casters sit beneath the base. The combination of an easily wiped marble surface, open platforms, and enclosed storage reflects its original use as bedroom washing furniture. Its rich walnut grain and carved ornament give it the presence of a small cabinet as well as a functional washstand. The piece belongs to the late-19th-century American Victorian cabinetmaking tradition and has been described in the Eastlake style. Such commode washstands kept washing equipment and personal supplies close at hand before indoor bathrooms became commonplace. Shows minor scuffs, scattered discoloration, and light finish wear consistent with age and use. 31" W x 16" D x 41.25" H Counter: 31.5" H Top drawer: 24.25" W x 12.25" D x 3.25" H Cupboard: 27.5" W x 13.5" D x 18" H MM - C-12405 - 012225 MM - 102926 This piece will need to ship via freight.
