Rough Garnet Ring, Made for Vered

Vered went down into a garnet mine in Austria and came out with a handful of rough garnet she had dug herself. The stones looked like nothing much: grey green lumps, still wearing the rock they grew in. With the shell and the pebbles I had left the material untouched. Here I wanted the opposite. Garnet grows in crystal faces, and those faces were buried under the crust, so I sent the rough to be sawn and then polished it myself, bringing the facets up while keeping the overall shape the stone came out with. What you see is not a cut gemstone and not a raw lump, but the crystal that was always inside it. One side of the stone stayed less beautiful than the rest. Rather than hide it under a setting, I carved a leaf in wax in the shape of a heart and laid it over that side in gold, so the gold covers what needed covering and becomes part of the stone's outline. The heart keeps coming back in the pieces I have made for Vered: hidden all through the Vered Heart Sapphire Halo Ring, and found ready made by the sea in the Coral Heart Pendant. The ring is 14K yellow gold. Three weeks later a second piece of the same rough became the Rough Garnet Earrings. This piece was made for Vered and is not for sale.
