Convertible Chair / Side Table, Europe, c. 1980
A distinctive postmodern convertible chair, most likely dating from the 1980s. Built around a particularly refined geometric vocabulary, it combines a circular seat with three cylindrical legs and a round backrest mounted on a pivoting mechanism. When folded into a horizontal position, the backrest becomes a tabletop, transforming the chair into a small two-tier side table. The mechanism is fully integrated into the structure, allowing the piece to shift easily from one function to the other. With its radical design, repetition of circular forms and multifunctional character, the piece reflects the experimental approach of late 20th-century European design. Designer and manufacturer unknown. Good vintage condition. Signs of use, scratches and minor losses to the finish are visible in the photographs and are consistent with the age of the piece.
