Punica granatum 'Maxima Rubra'
Punica granatum 'Maxima Rubra' is the flowering pomegranate: a bushy shrub covered in large, double, crinkled orange-red flowers about 6cm across, from June right through to September. It is sterile and sets no fruit, so this is a purely ornamental pomegranate; for the species, see our Punica granatum. New leaves open bronze-copper, turn glossy bright green for summer and go yellow in autumn before they fall.Rated H3, it takes about -5°C. It does best in mild, coastal or town gardens, ideally against a warm south- or west-facing wall, and young plants need protecting for their first winters: fleece it in hard frost or move a pot under cover, and keep the roots out of winter wet.Once established it is drought tolerant, which makes it a good fit for a hot wall, dry and gravel gardens or a large container among our plants for pots. Give it the sunniest spot you have, as it needs heat to flower well. It matures into a shrub or small multi-stemmed tree of about 3m.What you receive: a plant in a 23cm / 5L pot.
