Made in Yoshida, Ureshino City in Japan's Saga Prefecture, the plate is crafted from porcelain using the traditions of Hizen Yoshida ware, a regional ceramic craft with centuries of history. Its warm, naturally speckled finish and beautifully simple form give it the character of an artisan object rather than a conventional incense burner. Look a little closer and the simplicity becomes more interesting. The raised edge curves around the plate before deliberately breaking beside the incense hole. Viewed from above, this forms the distinctive “C” of Chië, itself inspired by the ensō, the circle found in Zen calligraphy and associated with enlightenment, wholeness and the beauty of imperfection. Chië takes its name from the Buddhist concept of wisdom: the ability to see things as they truly are. The generous 13cm diameter gives the incense stick room to burn over the plate, helping to catch falling ash while creating a beautifully balanced display. The warm neutral glaze pairs particularly well with the natural colours of Chië incense, although its understated design works just as easily with other suitable Japanese style incense sticks.
