Sound of Confusion: Twenty Years of Noise (1966–1986)
Also in this series: Kosmische Musik (1969–1976) · Walkin' in the Sand (1958–1964) Ten bands, twenty years of noise, from the 13th Floor Elevators in 1966 to Spacemen 3 in 1986, in order of debut album. Feedback, drone and repetition passed down the line, from Texas to New York, Ann Arbor to Düsseldorf, East Kilbride to Rugby. The Velvet Underground get top billing, because almost everything on this list goes back to them. Silver Apples brought the oscillators, MC5 and the Stooges the volume, Neu! the motorik pulse, Suicide the minimalism. Sonic Youth pushed it into pure noise, and The Jesus and Mary Chain buried pop songs under feedback. The title comes from the Spacemen 3 debut, Sound of Confusion, released in 1986 and recorded in five days for less than £800. A typographic print in the style of an old gig bill. Printed to order and signed by me.
