Search Amazon for a pizza oven cover and half the results are barbecue covers relisted, sold fast and priced low enough that most people live with the shortcomings. That's the problem: whether it fits comes down to how close the guess was. The one in the photo was bought for a 16-inch Big Horn. The elastic hem is too tight to pull down under the base, so it has stopped on top of the rail. Because it can't seat, the fabric above bunches. One dimension out, and none of the rest of it sits where it should. A size up would clear the base and be loose everywhere else. Either way the cover doesn't hold. Wind gets under a hem that never reached and lifts it. Water sits in the folds instead of running off. What Does a Pizza Oven Cover Protect Against? Rain, damp, sun, wind-blown grit, frost, and nesting birds. An oven has a chimney at the top and a mouth at the front, so all six get inside it as well as onto it. Rain Down the Chimney An open chimney is a funnel. Rain runs down the flue onto the baking stone, and stone is porous, so it holds what it takes. Fire it before it has dried and the water turns to steam inside the stone, which is what cracks it. Damp Shut In A closed oven does not dry. At night the bare steel inside cools faster than the air, and the water in that air condenses onto the roof and walls. Rust follows it on the steel, and mould on the stone. Grit, dust and leaves blow into the open mouth and down the flue, and stay on the stone until the next cook bakes them in. Frost Water sitting in a porous dome and in the flue joints freezes and pushes outward. On a brick or clay oven that is what opens the hairline cracks every firing leaves, a little wider each winter. Birds & Nests An open oven is a dry hole in a garden, and something will move in. Birds and mice build in the mouth over winter, and a nest against the stone is fuel the first time you light it.
