Inside, every page is framed in its own festive border of candy canes, ornaments, holly, and berries. The book carries no visible date or copyright, so we place it in the 1950s by its 29¢ cover price, the spelled-out state name, and the absence of a ZIP code, which did not exist until 1963. The front cover carries an artist's signature that we have not been able to decipher. With 96 pages, that's a lot of fun to color! A charming find for Christmas ephemera collectors, and for anyone styling a nursery, playroom, or holiday bookshelf with nostalgic color. Founded in Akron, Ohio, around 1900, Saalfield grew into one of the largest publishers of children's books and activity materials in the world. It produced coloring books, paper dolls, and puzzles until it closed in 1977, and its archive is now held at Kent State University. The cover carries the octagonal "Commended by Parents' Magazine" seal, marked "as advertised therein," a mid-century mark displayed on children's products to reassure parents.
