Chinese Stoneware Martaban Jar Mounted as a Table Lamp

China, 19th century A substantial Chinese stoneware jar of compressed baluster form, later mounted as a table lamp. The body is decorated with a series of moulded circular panels enclosing stylised floral and foliate motifs, all beneath a rich olive-brown glaze that has developed a deep lustre and varied surface texture over time. Originally intended for storage, the vessel displays the robust potting and practical elegance associated with traditional Chinese export stoneware. The moulded medallions provide a pleasing rhythm across the body, while the broad shoulders and short neck create a strong architectural silhouette. Areas of kiln effect, glaze pooling and surface wear contribute to the character and authenticity of the piece. Sensitively converted as a lamp, the jar retains its decorative appeal while lending warmth and texture to an interior. The earthy glaze and sculptural form make it particularly well suited to country house, coastal or contemporary settings.
