This fine-quality Afghan Kazak rug, handmade by skilled artisan weavers, features a classic Caucasian design. Crafted from vegetable-dyed, hand-spun wool, using Indigo plants to create the intense blue without using a mordant on the wool before dyeing. In this case the wool requires a special vat process to ensure the Indigo blue colour is achieved. Although Kazaks are hand-knotted in Afghanistan, the design originates from the Caucasus. The short pile emphasises the sharpness of the pattern. Each piece is made using excellent Afghan wool, usually spun in Ghazni. Afghan wool is generally slightly coarser and more curly than other wools, making it perfect for carpet weaving. Afghan Kazak carpets are traditionally made with bold geometric designs in intense, vibrant colours such as rich reds, warm terracottas, and shades of blues with soft golds and creams. In Pakistan, the final carpet stage involves many processes; initial tensioning and alignment problems may be undertaken, followed by surface clipping, herbal washing, and tumbling.
