The SSI Divemaster program is the first step in an exciting professional diving career. As a Divemaster intern with Tas Divers, you'll complete a hands-on internship alongside our instructor team — gaining real-world experience teaching people to scuba dive, perfecting your own skills, and learning what it takes to lead and supervise divers professionally. This qualification is widely recognised for employment in the dive industry across Tasmania and around the world. Course Outline | Internship Format | 3–12 Months Digital Learning (Online Study): understand the full scope of the Divemaster role and professional responsibilities Pool Training: in-water skills workshops and pool sessions with student divers Ocean Dives: supervise and work in open water across a range of conditions and dive sites Mentoring: assist on real Tas Divers courses with certified instructors — lead dives, conduct briefings and manage students and logistics in real time Topics & Skills The Divemaster Role & Responsibilities Preparing for & Conducting Dives Dive Emergencies & Risk Management Your Career with SSI Supervising Dive Activities & Assisting Student Divers Dive Setup & Logistics Management Mapping Dive Sites & Navigation Conducting Dive Briefings Search & Recovery Techniques Divemaster Conducted Programs & Specialised Skills Prerequisites SSI Stress & Rescue Diver certification or equivalent from a recognised training agency Minimum age | 18 years old Minimum 40 logged dives to commence (60 logged dives required to earn certification) Current First Aid, CPR & Oxygen Provider certification (contact us for details) Current dive medical Must be able to: Swim 400m continuously Swim 800m with mask, snorkel & fins Tread water for 15 minutes (final 2 minutes with hands above the surface) Additional SSI certifications required (or equivalent experience — minimum 5 logged dives in each area): Deep Diving (deeper than 30 metres) Navigation Night & Limited Visibility Diving What's Included What's Needed Online SSI training materials Professional SSI instruction & mentoring All scuba equipment (own gear recommended) Pool training sessions Ocean dives across multiple sites & courses Theory workshops SSI Divemaster certification 1-year Tas Divers Club membership (valued at $100) Mask & snorkel DSMB + reel (recommended) Own transport — including the ability to transport scuba gear & tanks for the duration of the course Current First Aid, CPR & Oxygen Provider certification Current dive medical (mandatory) Dive insurance (required upon completion for active status) The Divemaster program is completed in conjunction with Tas Divers' active course schedule — your internship experience will span a range of real courses and student groups.
