Elora’s Armoury Hall: The Curious Past of our LCBO Rifles, Entertainment and Liquor Join us for an evening in our local lecture series as we step inside one of Elora’s most storied buildings, hosted by celebrated local historian, storyteller, and author Al Koop. Originally constructed to house the Volunteer Rifle Company, the Armoury Hall was born out of debate, with townspeople fiercely divided over where it should stand. That tension remains in stone above the entrance, where an out of place rooster still lives in the masonry today. At the center of the story is “Professor” Ritchie, known for his many roles as sergeant, town crier, comedian, and tireless promoter. Under his influence, the hall evolved into a vibrant gathering place for concerts, plays, political rallies, and community meetings. Among those that met there was the Temperance Society, whose members would have been horrified knowing that the halls future was becoming a popular outlet for wines and spirits Enjoy a cocktail and our newly refined menu in the Royal Room as we continue to dig into Eloras rich history with Al Koop! $10 per person in advance, $12 at the door if space allows. Thursday June 11th, doors at 6pm, show at 7pm. About our Host: Al Koop has been an avid collector and performer of stories, ballads and folk songs. As a member of the Wellington County Historical Society since 1978, he has developed a special interest in local history, oral accounts, stories and songs.
