A Shino chawan by Kato Ryotaro, the eighth-generation artist of Kōbei-gama in Mino. Its generous, rounded form has the presence of a small planet. Across the snow-like white Shino glaze, vivid scarlet fire marks spread boldly, while a deeply fired reddish-brown landscape appears at the center. The contrast between the soft white and the burning red is striking, giving the bowl a sense of intense heat held within quietness. The interior is also richly colored with scarlet tones, where finger marks create their own landscape. Around the foot, the glaze has been left off to reveal the soft clay of Mino, allowing the character of the earth itself to be felt. Two areas along the rim have been repaired with red lacquer, and these restorations blend naturally into the scenery of the piece. True to its poetic title, “Kakujaku” — a name suggesting radiant red within stillness — this Shino chawan holds a quiet presence within its vivid brilliance. It is a powerful and dignified work, full of the distinctive strength and refinement of the artist. Width 12.8cm/Height 9.7cm With the original signed wooden box and matching cloth.
