This painting, by the Renaissance master, Pietro Perugino (1446-1523), was originally used as an altarpiece. It was commissioned by a wealthy Italian family in 1499 for their private chapel. Over the centuries it moved between countries and displays, and since the 1960s has been kept in the Pope's own apartment. Except for two special exhibitions since, the altarpiece is not accessible for public view, although the painting is visible in many photos of the pope's private meetings with heads of state and other emissaries. Pietro Perugino, like many painters at the time, oversaw a workshop that helped create his major commissions. Born in the 15th century, and well into middle age by the time he created this painting, he would have been familiar from childhood with the Medieval style of altarpieces, displayed in churches throughout Italy. We love how he incorporated elements of Medieval iconography with burgeoning Renaissance trends. Namely, we like the traditional gilding and symmetrical, serene composition, combined with highly developed realism in his depiction of Christ, his attending angels, and the sleeping guards. This extends to the greenery of the landscape, which you can see in many Renaissance paintings (e.g., The Mona Lisa). This is the moment that Jesus has triumphed over death, and his expression conveys the peace and hope that he brings to all humankind. We hope that this print, like all of the ones in our shop, will serve as a reminder of our faith for you and those around you. ** IMPORTANT ** THE IMAGE IS SMALLER THAN THE PAPER! There is a blank border around the image. Approximately 0.5" wide for 5x7, 1.3" for 8.5x11, 1.6" for 11x14, and 1.75" for 13x17 and 16x20. For the two poster sizes, 18x24 and 24x36, we use 0.5" borders. We do this because the ratio of the rectangle of the art almost never matches the rectangle of the paper, and if it did happen to match one size, it would not match the others. Most fine art printers do this because otherwise they’d have to crop the art or warp it to make it fit the paper. The border looks good. It gives the picture a faux matted appearance. There is almost always a little more border either on the left-right sides, or the top-bottom, depending on whether the ratio of the art is wider or taller than the paper. We make Archival Quality fine art prints: – Acid-free paper – Archival pigments – Cardboard backer for sizes 11x14 and less. – Above story of the art – Enclosed in a tight-fitting, crystal-clear bag. – Rated to last 200+ years without fading if kept dry and out of the direct sun.
