This plant grows along riverbeds and lush forests with a bright colored spathe guarding the more deeply colored flowery spike. Unlike most plants this relies on flies to pollinate it so it warms the air around the flower and emits the smell of rotting meat. While they bloom in the spring,it'ss not until fall that their bright red berries are grown. Both berries and roots contain a toxin called arione that give the plant a bitter taste and cause burning and blistering. This is where the beauty comes in. The roots have been used throughout the Elizabethan era as a starch for the famous lace ruffs. Or if soaked it was used as an exfoliant to burn off and bleach coarse skin. While each color has its own specific recipe every skein is individually hand dyed and hand painted which may cause colors to vary in distribution. If using more than one skein in a project I recommend alternating skeins.
