This comprehensive book is a review of ten years full of ideas, exhibitions, events and encounters and documents the success story that began with the first research in 2016 – a FLASHBACK to ten years that have made Eine Stadt Wird Bunt (A CITY BECOMES COLOURFUL) a cultural beacon. FLASHBACK documents all facets of the EINE STADT WIRD BUNT project over the past ten years: from the development of the idea and the intensive research since 2016 to crowdfunding and the production of the book, to the first presentations at festivals, galleries and museums. A special focus is the large exhibition at the Museum of Hamburg History (2022 – 2024) with its diverse exhibition views. This is supplemented by all the content of the interactive app “EINE STADT WIRD BUNT”, by workshops, lectures and talks as well as by accompanying publications, events and numerous activities. Readers experience a complete review of these years, supplemented by interviews with the project initiators, background reports and previously unpublished image material from the 1980s. FLASHBACK makes visible the emergence of a new, living culture of remembrance that has significantly shaped the city of Hamburg over the past ten years and inspired many actors in other cities.
