Hedqvist graduated in 1929 and studied at the Otte Sköld’s Painting School in Stockholm. Initially he painted figurative and landscape artworks in oil. He had his first exhibition in 1932 together with fellow artists Lennart Gram and Curt Clemens and got his breakthrough during World War II with exhibitions in the Swedish-French art gallery. Hedqvist was influenced by modern French painting, and he favourite subjects and inspirations included the archipelago of Stockholm, Arild and Kullabygden as well as southern France. As his career progressed into the 1950s and 60s his work headed in more of an abstract direction. Hedqvist produced numerous public art pieces around Sweden including painted murals, mosaics and textiles. In addition he worked in the theater creating theater backdrops and art direction in the 1940s and 50s. His work is represented in numerous public collections in Scandinavia including the National Museum in Stockholm, Moderna Museet (Modern Museum) in Stockholm, Lund Gallery, Helsingborg Gallery and the National Gallery in Oslo. He was a member of the Thielska Galleriet from 1961-197, as chairman of the Nordic Art Association and member of the Danish Art Council. He passed away in 1997 in Stockholm.
