Its roots contain various alkaloids (most notably berberine) which stimulate digestive secretions in the stomach, liver and pancreas-- thus this herb is often used for poor digestion/food stagnation as well as for issues related to incomplete/sluggish digestion (e.g. chronic skin conditions, chronic pain & inflammation, chronic fatigue, etc...). As noted, Oregon Grape contains berberine as a constituent and as such has anti-microbial properties (like goldenseal does); so the herb can be used as a topical for skin conditions and to fight infection.
