Antique French Martres-Tolosane Confit Pot

Blue glazed confit pots from Martres-Tolosane are highly coveted, exceptionally rare treasures that represent a completely different regional tradition. Dating primarily from the 19th century, these unique vessels come from a historic artistic hub in Southwest France and carry a distinct pride of craftsmanship.While most rural potteries across France produced strictly utilitarian, unadorned clay vessels for food preservation, the artisan potters of Martres-Tolosane brought their refined, artistic faïence sensibilities to everyday objects. The most striking element of a Martres-Tolosane confit pot is its periwinkle to deep cobalt blue glaze. The lustrous blue hue was achieved by mixing cobalt or iron oxides directly into a tin-based or terre de fer (ironstone) glaze formula. Unlike standard yellow pots with unglazed bottoms, Blue Martres-Tolosane pots were considered a premium luxury—sometimes called the “poor man’s fine porcelain” because they brought a touch of high-end faïence aesthetic into a farmhouse budget. This pot is a masterpiece of quality and style and its condition is impeccable for its age. It does have one very small old hairline on the interior white lip.
