Okayama Castle, Japan
This drawing shows Okayama Castle, made at the end of a day spent in the nearby Korakuen Garden. I had spent most of the day walking and drawing in the gardens, and by the time I reached the castle I didn’t have long. I found a place to sit and worked quickly, trying to capture the structure before the light shifted. The drawing is more immediate and economical than some of the others, but I like the way it holds together — a sense of the form, the dark rooflines, and the contrast against the sky. It felt like a good way to end the day, moving from the quiet of the gardens to this final, more urgent drawing.
