This ʻOpuʻu Shell Top features our ʻUlukau print on Brwn Chambray material with Peapod ink. ʻUlukau The name Ulukau means placed inspiration. "It is the unplanned acquisition of prophetic and interpretive powers without visible possession of a god," na Mary Kawena Pukui. Sometimes, during the actual process of creation, I often lose myself to the blade. The cutting of rubylith demands a focus - it takes me places. I don't know how the image was created because I could not have done it on my own; I know there was another hand guiding the blade. Ulu means to inspire, to grow, to build. The exercise to create is a joy! Rather than following a plan, allow the naʻau to direct! The piko and the naʻau are connections to our ancestors and through them, we are guided by our forefathers. While cutting this design, I found myself immersed in the interpretation. The symbols are metaphors of thought. Each represents a story that has been told, and through this design, from the naʻau. ʻOpuʻu Shell Top We gave this name to this design in memory of the fields of red liko! When we first opened SZD, Nālani designed this shell top. Simple with our trademark coconut buttons on the shoulder, this top is meant to play. Nothing to fuss about, easy wear, and refreshing for a Hilo day. We give this updated style the name ʻŌpuʻu as the off shoot from the mother kalo (the mother being the original top created by Nālani). Model is 5’6” and wearing a size L. This style runs small so you may want to consider sizing up.
