Known for their peaceful temperament, Neon Blue Acaras are relatively tolerant fish that rarely cause trouble and generally get along well with most tankmates, except during breeding when aggression may arise. With proper care and aquarium conditions, Neon Blue Acaras can have a lifespan of up to 10 years, or even 20 years in the wild. Popular among aquarists, these fish exhibit a curious nature, often seen digging into the substrate, which, while harmless in the wild, may pose a challenge to aquarium equipment. Typically found near the base or middle layer of the tank due to their passion for burrowing, Neon Blue Acaras engage in a healthy mix of hiding and swimming behavior. Maternal care is noteworthy, with females exhibiting mammal-like behavior by providing food to their offspring—a unique trait among fish. The electric appearance of Neon Blue Acaras features a predominantly light blue body with netted dark patterns, white, black, or yellowish spots, and fins edged in orange. Their elongated and compressed body reaches a size of around 17-18cm. Hailing from the slow-flowing freshwater basins of South America, Neon Blue Acaras thrive in heavily planted rivers with rich feeding grounds. To replicate their natural habitat, a large planted tank with proper aeration and filtration is recommended. The substrate should consist of rounded gravel or large grains of sand to accommodate their burrowing habits, and a balance between decorations and open swimming space is essential. Neon Blue Acaras can be kept together, preferably in pairs or groups of at least six. Care should be taken to prevent overfeeding, as these fish are not particularly greedy. A diverse diet comprising meaty foods such as bloodworms, shrimp, and mussel, along with high-quality, varied fish foods, supports their nutritional needs. Breeding Neon Blue Acaras is relatively straightforward. with fewer plants than the main tank, large grains of sand, and flat rocks for egg deposition are suitable conditions. Maintaining a water temperature around 26°C and a slightly acidic to neutral pH (6.5-7 pH) with proper aeration is crucial. Paired males and females protect their offspring near the rocks, with females laying approximately 150-200 eggs.
