Digital technology meets analog letterpress printing. Today’s letterpress printers frequently blend digital tools with traditional printing to create business cards, luxury stationery, posters, and other paper goods. In this class, students will learn the foundational skills needed to successfully create digital letterpress designs. Topics include proper file preparation and output, plate ordering tips, inking solutions, and printing on a hand-operated press. We’ll also discuss paper selection and resources. Along the way we’ll trouble shoot challenges together, for a well-rounded learning experience. This multi-week workshop will be taught over 3 sessions and each session builds on the previous, so attending all sessions is essential. Session 1: Introduction to designing digitally for letterpress and overview of project parameters Session 2: Review and refine individual designs for output; hands-on letterpress printing experience in preparation for printing your final designs (Session 3) Session 3: Printing designs from your custom plates on letterpress Please read: This class does not cover how to use design software. Prior knowledge and access to digital design and illustration software is the responsibility of each student. Please bring your own laptop or digital device to class. Students must have a computer, internet, and access to design programs capable of EPS or PDF output. Prior letterpress printing experience is not required. Supplies Provided: Ink, paper, presses Supplies to Bring: Snacks, drinks in closed container Session 2 bring your own computer or tablet to review and refine designs Registration is non-refundable or exchangeable.
