Myself is Miki Matsubara’s fourth studio album, originally released in 1982. Polished city pop, AOR, funk, and fusion come together around Matsubara’s expressive vocals, with songs ranging from the sleek groove of “See-Saw Love” to the reflective title track and the candlelit album closer “Three Candles.” The album’s rhythm section is performed by Motown-associated funk-fusion group Dr. Strut, while leading Japanese horn players, including trumpeter Susumu Kazuhara and saxophonist Jake H. Concepcion, add vivid brass arrangements. Matsubara contributed three compositions herself, making Myself one of the most personal entries in her catalog.
