Crafting with Microbes: An introduction to Bioart August 22nd, 1-3pm 18+ In-Person only Just beyond our line of sight exists a realm of mysterious, frequently misunderstood, and often breathtakingly beautiful creatures. In this science-art workshop, you’ll not only visit this microscopical realm with the help of a microscope and petri plates, but also work with microbes to craft new artwork—and gain a whole new appreciation of the importance of small things in the process. This workshop is led by Microbiologist, 5x TED/TEDx speaker, life long Maine resident, and recent recipient of National Geographic’s Wayfinder Award, Dr. Anne A. Madden! It offers the opportunity to gain an in depth tour of the museum’s special exhibit, “Microbes and Mushrooms: Nature’s Artistry in Detail,” while getting an awe-filled introduction to the basics of beneficial microbes and mushrooms. Following this introduction, there will be access to various science-art stations, along with guided instruction on techniques, allowing participants to see, handle, and create with microbes in new ways. There will be plenty of time to ask questions, meet your fellow crafters, and indulge in plenty of wonder. Details: During this roughly two-hour workshop, participants will be able to participate in the following activities: - Use a microscope and capture a digital photo of your own microscopic landscape with the help of award-winning science-artist Tracy Debenport (visit her work at @under.the.scope on Instagram to see examples). Your photo will be sent to you following the class. - Generate your own “agar art,” by painting with living baking yeast on petri plates. One week later, you’ll be sent a link to photos of your artwork after it has grown. - Learn about ongoing microbial research efforts related to amphibian conservation, and then contribute to these efforts by using microbe-dyed fabric to create a mixed media square to the world’s largest participatory bioart work, “Purple Partnerships.” - All workshop supplies are provided. No previous experience with art or science required. Open to anyone 18+. The instructors will make every effort to ensure this workshop is accessible to broad audiences. If you have a question or concerns related to special accommodations, please reach out to the Museum of Beadwork. Refund Policy: Due to the limited spaces and perishable nature of some of the supplies, this class is non-refundable. Thank you for your understanding.
