First Light at Beaghmore

At first light, the ancient stone circles of Beaghmore emerge from the Tyrone landscape, their long shadows reaching across the grass beneath a luminous morning sky. I captured this photograph at dawn during a recent visit to Beaghmore, high in the Sperrin Mountains. The low sun revealed the remarkable form of the monument in a way that ordinary daylight could not – circles, stone rows and solitary uprights becoming part of a vast pattern of light and shadow. Beaghmore is one of Ireland’s most extraordinary prehistoric ceremonial landscapes. Its stones have stood here since the Bronze Age, surrounded by open moorland and an immense expanse of sky. Although the beliefs and intentions of its builders remain elusive, the monument still invites us to pause and contemplate the relationship between stone, landscape, time and the heavens. “First Light at Beaghmore” is reproduced as a high-quality photographic print and is available in four sizes.
