Norfloxacin

Norfloxacin is a synthetic fluoroquinolone antibiotic with broad-spectrum activity against a wide range of Gram-negative and selected Gram-positive bacteria. It acts by inhibiting bacterial DNA gyrase and topoisomerase IV (enzymes critical for bacterial DNA supercoiling and segregation), thereby blocking DNA replication and cell division. Norfloxacin is widely used to investigate antibacterial mechanisms, bacterial physiology, antimicrobial resistance and drug susceptibility. It also serves as a valuable analytical reference standard for pharmaceutical, environmental, and microbiological studies. It may be used as a standard in the determination of norfloxacin in human serum samples using fluorometric spectrophotometry.
