About the Artist Uncle John Smith Gumbula QEII Silver Jubilee Queen's Trust Awardee Cultural Ambassador | Senior Indigenous Affairs Advisor | Chief Creative Uncle John Smith Gumbula is an internationally recognised Indigenous artist, cultural ambassador and respected leader whose artistic journey began in 1978 following a prolonged hospital stay during childhood. During this time, creativity became both a source of healing and the foundation for a lifelong commitment to cultural education and artistic expression. A proud Wakka Wakka and Goreng Goreng man, with family connections across Queensland, New South Wales and Western Australia, Uncle John also honours his Scottish and Irish heritage through his mother and is an adopted son of the Yolŋu people of Galiwinku, Elcho Island.
