It cannot remember what the last state was. Why? Backlight light on keyboard extrudes from under the keys a lot more than the previous generations of this laptop. So even on the lowest setting, it's still too bright. There is very subtle coil whining. Fingerprint reader not as responsive as older generations. Boot times are awful. I had a 5 year old thinkbook 14 gen 2 that was on the fritz. I abused that laptop so much and it still boots to windows faster today than this brand new laptop. I expected good build quality from the makers of Thinkpad, but this Thinkbook I got has so far been below par compared to other mid-tier laptops I have owned. With the highest battery-saving settings active and wifi off, writing a word document drains a full battery in about 4 hours. You can change the keyboard backlight and battery charge settings in the OS, but they just revert on restart. The rubber feet on the bottom of the laptop are uneven, so it wobbles whenever I type. The charging cable has some movement in the USB charge port; it's not a firm fit. All in all, although the hardware specs are good, I am pretty disappointed with the build quality. Much nicer than my old IdeaPad Anonymous Verified Purchaser a year ago [This review was collected as part of a promotion.] After owning an IdeaPad for a couple of years, I decided it was time to upgrade. I wanted 3 functions that were not on my IdeaPad. Back-lit key board, USB ports on right AND left sides, and an ethernet outlet. I bought my adult daughter a ThinkBook for 2024 Christmas and after seeing it, I decided to upgrade. The ThinkBook feels sturdier but the speakers on the IdeaPad were located better for sound projection. I'll sacrifice sound quality for the other options I really wanted. Been using it for a week and couldn't be happier. Driving 2 external monitors, connected by RJ 45 to my router directly so getting great speed, especially uploads/downloads. Heartily recommend!
