Unbreakable Test Tube

This is a stainless steel test jar for taking hydrometer or alcoholmeter readings. It does the same job as a normal glass test jar. Plastic test jars aren’t recommended when you’re working with high ABV spirits, so glass is the usual alternative. The problem is that glass breaks. I’ve gone through six or seven of them myself. This is the version I wish I’d started using earlier. Fill the centre tube with your sample, then lower in your hydrometer or alcoholmeter. The liquid rises slightly above the top of the inner tube, leaving the meniscus clearly visible. In fact, the solid background makes the reading surprisingly clean and easy to see. Any displaced liquid flows into the surrounding well instead of spilling across the bench. Once you’ve taken the reading, pull out the hydrometer or alcoholmeter and tip the sample back wherever it needs to go. But over time, it’ll probably cost less than continually replacing glass jars, and it avoids using plastic with high proof spirits.
